If you love the outdoors, Stanley is one of the best places in Idaho to visit. This small town has something for every outdoor enthusiast including incredible hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities. While the summer is an extremely popular time to visit Stanley and the surrounding area, there is nothing like the fall. In fact, in my opinion, fall is when this small town in Idaho comes alive. The fall foliage is spectacular, the crowds are starting to dwindle, and it is the perfect temperature to immerse yourself in nature.
Stanley is a small town in the Sawtooth Valley with just over 200 residents. It sits near the Sawtooth Mountains and is surrounded by more than 1,000 miles of breathtaking wilderness. In fact, many individuals consider this to be the most beautiful area in Idaho.
Summer brings a large crowd to the area but once autumn arrives, the crowds start to dwindle and the town seems to take on more of a sleepy vibe. However, step outside and you’ll see this town is just coming to life.
Stanley is a premier leaf-peeping destination in Idaho. The vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges cover the mountains and line the rivers, creating a magical scene.
I recommend the Fishhook Creek Trail, which is a 4.5-mile out-and-back trail with little elevation gain and the most stunning views.
Redfish Lake is an absolute must-visit destination during the fall months. While the water is too cold for swimming, fall is an excellent time for fishing, visiting the lodge, taking a scenic drive, or even hiking around the lake.
Just a short drive from town, Kirkham Hot Springs is complete with a waterfall and multiple soaking pools. It is one of the best and most scenic hot springs in Idaho.
And, of course, when you want something sweet for all of your adventures, Stanley Baking Co. & Café is the place to go for breakfast and lunch.
Be aware that many restaurants and businesses in Stanley do close at the end of autumn.
