It’s really such a shame the fall colors don’t last longer, but we suppose that’s what makes seeing them so special every year. Thankfully, Idaho is full of great places to see fall foliage, and one of our favorite destinations is the great Snake River Canyon. This region of southern Idaho is gorgeous all year long, but there’s truly no time like the present.
If you'd like to see some of Idaho's most majestic fall scenery, then you'll have to travel to one of the state's most majestic landscapes: the Snake River Canyon. There are all sorts of ways to explore this beautiful region, but the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway may just be one of the best.
Consisting of 62 miles that stretch across southern Idaho, the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway makes for a wonderful excursion when you feel like surrounding yourself in the Gem State's natural beauty—no matter what season. However, we have to admit there's something particularly stunning about the byway during fall.
Starting in Bliss and leading you east on Highway 30 through Twin Falls, the byway shows off some of the Snake River Canyon's very best scenery. This includes sights such as the stunning Thousand Springs State Park, complete with endless waterfalls and rugged canyon bliss.
The Snake River boasts some of the most splendid autumnal beauty. The cottonwood trees and other foliage which line the river turn magnificent shades of yellow, red, and orange, leaving you completely mesmerized by their vibrancy.
Other notable locations along the byway include various hot springs, fish hatcheries, and the one and only Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. This scenic ride knows how to keep your attention from beginning to end.
The scenic byway usually takes around two hours to complete, but you could easily spend longer than that if you choose to really soak up this area's beauty. The towering Shoshone Falls is well-worth a side trip. Its flow is usually pretty light this time of year, but the surrounding fall scenery definitely makes up for it!
The Thousand Springs Scenic Byway is a great way to get to know the rugged geology of the Snake River Canyon. Additionally, fall is the perfect time to set off on this adventure for the canyon's colorful displays, so be sure to get on the road and see it for yourself soon.
