It’s that wonderful time of year where many of our state’s waterfalls are flowing at full force. It gives us the perfect chance to seek one out. Most Idahoans have heard of iconic Gem State destinations like Shoshone Falls or Mesa Falls, but our state is filled with gorgeous lesser-known waterfalls that are just as worthy of an adventure. In fact, the secret waterfall featured here is a breathtaking sight that you’ll be glad you made the journey for! This unique natural wonder is a must for any Idahoan so check it out.
Hiding off the beaten path in the Sawtooth Mountains is a spectacular waterfall that most people don't even know exists. To get to it, you'll have to traverse a moderate hike called Iron Creek Trail, but you'll see that it's SO worth it.
Located within the Sawtooth Wilderness Area, Iron Creek Trailhead can be found west of Stanley off of Forest Road 619. From here, you'll immediately be led into the forest for the adventure of a lifetime.
The trail closely follows Iron Creek. After about a mile you'll come across a junction. Turn left to follow Alpine Way Trail, which then crosses Iron Creek. You'll know you're on the right path when you cross a bridge after about 1.5 miles.
From here, the trail starts to make a steep climb, so you'll definitely want to prepare yourself. Although challenging in some parts, the stunning vistas of the Sawtooths proves to be a nice distraction from the climb.
The trail levels off after awhile so you can catch your breath. You'll continue trekking through forest and hillside before coming across one of the most spectacular hidden waterfalls. Named Goat Falls, it's considered the largest waterfall in the Sawtooth Mountains!
The sight of Goat Falls flowing at full force is simply incredible. You could spend hours sitting and taking it all in. However, the waterfall isn't the only surprise this trail has to offer.
If you continue on the trail, you'll come across the body of water which Goat Falls flows into—Goat Lake. Boasting magnificently clear water and views that seem too good to be true, the lake is a true hidden gem of the Sawtooths.
This 6.8-mile hike may be challenging in some parts, but getting to see both Goat Falls and Goat Lake makes it so worth it. Make it your goal to see this little-known waterfall sometime soon. After all, there's no time like the present.
