Although it's part of University of Idaho, many visitors find themselves in awe when they stumble upon the college's arboretum and botanical garden. The 63-acre property is open from dawn to dusk year round and admission is completely free.
The U of I Arboretum and Botanical Garden literally looks like something out of a storybook! Complete with a charming red barn at the garden's entrance, this place is simply magical and you'll want to spend hours getting lost in it all.
The university's very first arboretum was established back in 1910 and consisted of merely 14 acres. Today, it is divided into four different geographical regions of plant origins including Asia, Europe, Eastern North America, and Western North America.
The Arboretum boasts an impressive collection of more than 17,000 plants of more than 2,400 different taxa. There are so many beautiful flowers and plants to look at. You could spend all day walking around and taking in all of the sights and smells.
You'll find a plethora of walking trails and benches located around the park totaling approximately a mile and a half. If you're ever in need of a place to kill some time while in Moscow, you'll find it here. Pack a picnic, some good walking shoes, and spend a few hours soaking up the peace and quiet.
There's really no bad time to visit the garden. It's open to the public all year long and boasts stunning scenery no matter what season it is. The garden comes alive with blooming flowers during the spring but summer is full of rich greens. Fall boasts beautiful tones of yellow, orange, and red, but the snow-covered arboretum is just as beautiful during winter.
Perhaps the most breathtaking feature of the park is the wide-open expanse of one of Idaho's loveliest landscapes—the Palouse. The rolling hills of lush green seem to go on forever.
