There are some incredible destinations around Idaho to view fall foliage. From the Boise River Greenbelt to Palisades Reservoir to the Selkirk Loop, there are places that come alive with color each autumn season. And while many of these areas attract visitors who want to enjoy Mother’s Nature show, there are a few lesser-known spots in Idaho that are just as scenic and gorgeous this time of year. Independence Lakes is one of them.

Independence Lakes actually consists of three alpine lakes in the Albion Mountains. To reach the lakes, you will have a climb ahead of you.

To reach Independence Lakes, you must tackle a 3.5-mile trail. This hike isn't short and easy as you will climb approximately 1,500 feet in elevation. But, the beauty of this hike makes every step of the journey well worth it.

You will begin your hike in the Independence Lakes Campground, a small yet beautiful campground. Your journey takes you through towering trees that in the fall, are covered in vibrant gold, orange, and red leaves.

As you continue your journey and hike out of the forest, you will come to a valley where you’ll capture some breathtaking views. Make sure you take some time to rest as the last stretch of the hike is the hardest.
After approximately three miles, you will come to the first of the lakes. Relax or continue on. If you wish to bring a fishing pole, these lakes offer excellent fishing opportunities.
