A lot of people count down all year to this month, which is full of scary attractions and thrills that will you horrify you…in a good way. Idaho is full of creative haunts that make this one of the best, and most intense, times of year. Perhaps the most impressive attraction is the popular Silverwood Theme Park in Athol, Idaho. October is the month when the family-friendly Silverwood Theme Park turns into the much anticipated “Scarywood,” which looks like something straight out of a nightmare. It is by far one of the most massive Halloween attractions in the state, and your month just isn’t complete until you’ve visited it.
Scarywood is open for only a limited amount of time every year in October. During this time, the theme park turns into the stuff of nightmares.
Scarywood contains five bone-chilling haunted attractions, seven "scare zones," and the opportunity to ride all of Silverwood's signature rides at night.
Scarywood has even gained national recognition for it's attractions, including Travel Channel's "Halloween's Scariest Thrills."
A ride on Scarywood's "Timber Terror" definitely isn't for the faint of heart. The roller coaster climbs 85 feet in the air before dropping you into several chains of hills...all while facing backwards.
"Planet Zombie" is the newest addition to Scarywood where you'll fend off hungry zombies in order to survive - for mature audiences only!
Planet Zombie is an immersive experience centered around the crashed Zombiewood Express, where you'll find yourself fighting off hordes of undead with fellow zombie hunters. Don't get infected or it's game over.
The theme park is made up of several "scare zones," all of which contain a different theme. "Clown Town" is by far one of the most terrifying scare zones.
Here you will encounter terrifying clowns in a Country Carnival setting. Other scare zones including "Crime Scene" where Leatherface lives, "Dollhouse" where the blank stares of dolls haunt you, and "Scarecrow Corner" where you can't help but feel something staring at you as you walk through stalks of corn.
One of the most popular attractions is the "Blood Bayou." It's a maze that takes place in a swamp setting, where scare actors dressed as ghosts and other creeptastic monsters jump out to the scare you.
After the maze you will be led into a hotel full of haunted creatures. The attraction itself is so detailed that it looks like it could be the set for a horror movie.
One of the most unique attractions in Scarywood is the 3Dementia, which is unlike any other scary maze you've been in.
You'll wear 3D glasses as you meander through this maze which is full of optical illusions coming at you from all sides. The visuals are designed to disorient you as you walk through this monster-filled attraction. Nowhere is safe!
Other attractions include "Total Darkness" which is a pitch dark maze which is definitely not for the claustrophobic. "Caved In" is another pitch dark maze where you'll use other senses to navigate your way through a creepy, closed-in cavern.
Scarywood is such an intense place that it doesn't recommend bringing any children 13 or younger, although it is ultimately up to the parent if the attractions are suitable for their children.
Scarywood is open only Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in October. The park's limited time frame makes it an incredibly anticipated event for thrill seekers all around Idaho. So, get your tickets soon if you haven't yet. For ticket purchases and more information, click
