The Route of the Hiawatha is a world-class trail that 15 miles of pure, scenic North Idaho beauty. Called one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country, the Route of the Hiawatha is a rail-trail in North Idaho that will take you on the ride of a lifetime.
In total, the 15-mile route winds through ten tunnels and over seven sky-high steel trestles, treating cyclists to extraordinary views the entire way. You'll definitely have a hard time keeping your eyes on the trail!
The iconic rail-trail can be accessed from Wallace or St. Maries, Idaho. Lookout Pass Ski Area is the most popular starting point, as the resort provides trail passes, shuttle tickets, and even mountain bike rentals with helmets and lights.
The best part of the trail is that it's mostly downhill! This means you'll enjoy an easygoing ride through the spectacular natural scenery. A shuttle at the end of the trail will help to transport you back up to the top.
The trail is home to some historic landmarks, including the 1.661-mile-long St. Paul Pass Tunnel (also known as the Taft Tunnel.) The tunnel is the longest in the state and has a fascinating story behind its creation.
Deemed a "Hall of Fame" trail by the Rail-to-Trail Conservancy, the Route of the Hiawatha never ceases to leave us amazed. The scenery is just outstanding, with mountains and pine trees going on for as long as the eye can see.
