Idaho has no shortage of beautiful lakes. From the stunning Lake Coeur d’Alene to Payette Lake to even Bear Lake, there are some breathtaking places to visit. While many of these lakes draw thousands of visitors, there is one lesser-known lake that is tucked away from the crowd and is so beautiful you only thought it existed in your dreams. Kane Lake is located in the Pioneer Mountain Range and is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the area. But, to enjoy it, you will have to put in the effort.
Kane Lake is one body of water that every hiker should put on his or her bucket list. Not only is the lake itself absolutely stunning, but the journey to reach Kane Lake is just as picturesque.
To reach Kane Lake, you must tackle an 8.5-mile out-and-back trail. This isn’t an extremely difficult trail but there are some challenging areas. Plus, you will climb more than 1,700 feet in elevation.
To reach the trailhead, you will follow Trail Creek Road from Sun Valley. Approximately 20 miles down this road, you will reach a forest service sign directing you to Kane Lake. Turn right and follow the road for approximately five miles until you reach the trailhead.

This hike takes you into the Pioneer Mountain Range. We suggest downloading a map of the trail as your path can become quite rocky and hard to follow. Plus, the views might distract you – this entire area is breathtaking.
Mid to late summer is a terrific time to visit Kane Lake. Due to its high elevation, the trail may be covered in snow clear into the month of June.
You may also want to bring your fishing pole as Kane Lake is well stocked with fish. Plus, don’t be surprised if you see deer and elk on your adventure.
Kane Lake may be tucked away in the mountains but it is one area that will inspire you in every way. It is certainly a magical place in Idaho that you thought only existed in your dreams.
