Idaho is America’s best-kept secret. There is so much to see and do, and every corner of the state is absolutely gorgeous. When you want to truly explore all that the Gem State has to offer, a road trip is the best option. Unfortunately, sometimes you just don’t have the time to get away. If you have just one free weekend, this is the road trip for you. This weekend road trip in Idaho will take you through pure Idaho perfection. From unique rock formations, state parks, and historical sites (this is just the beginning!), you are in for an incredible few days that you likely won’t forget.
If you complete this road trip in its entirety, you will travel approximately 350 miles and sit eight hours behind the wheel. Feel free to begin your trip in Almo or McCall — either location works. Check out this interactive map to customize your trip based on your starting and ending locations.
City of Rocks National Reserve, Almo
City of Rocks National Reserve, Almo, ID 83312, USA
City of Rocks is tucked away in southern Idaho and will make you feel like you are on another planet. This area features the most incredible rock formations that have become extremely popular with rock climbers. Bring some hiking shoes as there are many delightful trails that you’ll want to explore during your visit.
You can’t drive through Twin Falls without stopping at the incredible Shoshone Falls, one of the most majestic waterfalls in the West. In fact, these massive falls are called the Niagara of the West and are 45 feet taller than the Niagara Falls back East. Stop at the viewpoints and capture some photos of these falls — they are absolutely stunning!

Thousand Springs State Park
Thousand Springs State Park - Ritter Island, 1205 Thousand Springs Grade, Wendell, ID 83355, USA
Thousand Springs State Park is one of our favorite state parks in Idaho. This state park isn't like many others around the Gem State as it is divided into six separate units. If you only have a short time to explore this park, we suggest a visit to Ritter Island. This unique area has a history that dates back to the pioneers and is home to waterfalls, natural springs, and more.
Speaking of the pioneers, make sure you don’t skip Three Island Crossing State Park in Glenns Ferry. This stop will take you back in time as you can view the original wagon ruts that were left behind by travelers on the Oregon Trail. Check out replicas of original pioneer wagons, go for a hike, capture remarkable views, and even spend the night in the park's campground or cabins.
Bruneau Dunes State Park
Bruneau Dunes State Park, 27608 Bruneau Sand Dunes Rd, Bruneau, ID 83604, USA
Bruneau Dunes State Park is another must-visit stop on this weekend road trip in Idaho. Here you will find some of Idaho’s most well-known sand dunes and for good reason. Not only are there incredible places to explore and hiking trails for all abilities in this state park, but you will also find the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America.
Idaho Botanical Garden, Boise
Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N Old Penitentiary Rd, Boise, ID 83712, USA
The next stop on our weekend road trip is found in the Boise foothills. The Idaho Botanical Garden is a 15-acre oasis with more than 7,000 plants and multiple gardens for you to observe and explore. Plus, if you time your stop just right, you may visit during one of the many festivals that take place at this botanical garden each year.
Did you know that Lake Cascade is actually a man-made reservoir and is the fourth-largest body of water in Idaho? This lake is quite a sight with mountains and trees surrounding it. If you have some time, stop and fish along the shore or just stand on the banks and admire the beauty of the area.
The final stop on our road trip is the town of McCall. This mountain town in Idaho is one charming destination that is filled with all types of shops, restaurants, and accommodations. McCall sits along the southern shore of Payette Lake and near Ponderosa State Park, so there are outdoor opportunities galore in the area.
