Idaho may be a relatively young state compared to other places in the country, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of historic places to explore. In fact, the Gem State is absolutely loaded with historic landmarks that are definitely worth a visit. But what’s the oldest place in Idaho? That would be the Cataldo Mission at Old Mission State Park. The mission is considered to be the oldest standing structure in all of Idaho. Not only that, but it’s absolutely stunning. You have to see it.
Have you ever wondered what the oldest place in Idaho is? You'll find it hiding at Old Mission State Park in gorgeous Coeur d'Alene. The Cataldo Mission isn't just full of history, but it's one of the most stunning structures in the state.
The Jesuit mission at Cataldo was built sometime in between 1850 and 1853. This building may be over 160 years old, but it's sure to take your breath away. The mission is downright beautiful, and any photographer's dream.
The construction of the mission was an impressive feat in itself. Not a single nail was used to construct the building. Instead, they used the "wattle and daub" method in which a sticky material (usually made from wet soil or clay) is used to keep wooden planks in place.
Not only can you stare in wonder at this beautiful structure, but you can even take a peak inside. Entrance into the church is only $5 per person or $10 per family.
Inside, you can't help but marvel at the striking interior. The church is absolutely grand, and it's hard to believe that it's considered the oldest building in Idaho. It's in incredible shape thanks to a restoration project that took place in 1976.
A small museum is located inside the mission containing exhibits with information about the Coeur d'Alene Natives and the Jesuits influence on the area.
The Parish House is also located nearby and can be visited. These buildings are absolutely stunning, and it doesn't hurt that they are located among rolling hills of green. It's like a scene straight off of a postcard.
Afterward, be sure to take advantage of the nature trail that takes you around the park. This area is absolutely beautiful, and makes for a quick, fun, and educational visit to one of Idaho's most historic places.
Have you visited the Cataldo Mission? Tell us about your experience in the comments below. This may be considered the oldest building, but have you visited Idaho’s oldest town? You’ll definitely want to check this place out!
