There’s definitely not a scarcity of beautiful small towns in Idaho. In fact, it seems that the majority of the state is composed of these quaint, yet absolutely gorgeous towns. This tiny northern Idaho town is known as “The Gateway to the Wilderness” for a reason. It is completely surrounded by stunning natural wilderness, which is an important part of the town’s history and heritage. With a size of less than 1 square mile total, it’s easy to miss the small community that resides in this area. However, a visit to this town might just be one of the most enchanting experiences you’ll ever have.
Kooskia (pronounced Koos-kee) began as a small farming community back when the area was first settled in 1895.
The town was first named Stuart but changed its name to Kooskia in 1902 in order to coincide with the Kooskia Train Depot which was located there. It is said that the name comes from the Nez Perce word "koos-koos-kia" which means "where the waters meet" and refers to the mighty Clearwater River which the town is neatly settled upon.
In it's early days, Kooskia and it's resources were an important destination for miners, loggers, and trappers.
However, traveling to Kooskia was difficult due to its location among complete, untouched wilderness. Travelling to the area in the early days often required a guide to help navigate.

The population of Kooskia is just a mere 651 people. A visit to this town is always an incredibly peaceful experience. In the spring and summer, lush vegetation thrives. The hills are covered in green for as long as the eyes can see.
In fall, misty mornings illuminate the vibrant fall colors among the trees. With just the sounds of rustling wildlife and the rushing Clearwater river in the distance... this feels like one of the most serene places in the world.
The Clearwater makes for some world-class fishing and contains popular game fish species such as steelhead, cutthroat, rainbow trout, and Chinook salmon. During the summer, the Clearwater, Lochsa, and Selway are all popular spots for whitewater rafting.
With the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests right in Kooskia's backyard, there are hundreds of amazing hiking trails that will lead you through dense forest and along sparkling rivers to heart-stopping views of the incredible region.
Even the downtown area, although small, is a magical experience in itself. The area certainly has all the charm of small town living and is definitely worth a visit.
No matter what the season is, this town is like a small slice of paradise. It makes perfect sense that a place like this is hidden away here in Idaho, where the beauty is unending!
