You never know what kind of hidden wonders you’ll stumble across during your explorations of Idaho. This 80-foot-tall natural arch, known King Mountain Natural Arch, is the perfect example of the awe-inspiring sights that await you here in the Gem State. Hiding way out in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, this is the type of sight that requires a little bit of work to see, but it’s definitely worth it. Once you get to the trailhead, it’s just a short half-mile trek to this unique natural wonder.
Situated on the southern end of King Mountain in Idaho is a massive, 80-foot-tall natural arch. Known as the King Mountain Natural Arch, this stunning natural wonder is definitely worth the short hike it takes to see it.
Hiding in a remote area where the small towns of Arco and Mackay are the closest signs of civilization, the natural arch is definitely a bit out of the way. You'll want to be sure to come prepared with plenty of supplies, plus a high-clearance vehicle if you have one.
To find the trail from the intersection of Highway 93 and Highway 20, take US Highway 20/26 south to Highway Drive and turn left. Follow the road and turn left on Dump Road, and left again on Arco Pass Road.
Follow Arco Pass Road for 3.75 miles to a ranch. Turn right at the ranch and follow the road 1.25 miles to an intersection. Turn left and follow this road 2.25 miles to a road to the left. Turn left on the road and follow it 1.5 miles to a road to the right. Turn right and follow this road 1.25 miles to the parking area for the trail.
Now that you've found the trailhead, the natural arch is just a half-mile away on the King Mountain Natural Arch Trail. Open only to hikers (no motorized vehicles allowed), the trail begins by leading you uphill through a landscape of rye grass, mountain mahogany, and sagebrush.
As the trail ascends, the foliage starts to change and stands of Douglas fir forest provides some much-needed shade. The trail is short but contains some steep sections, so be prepared for a brief but strenuous calf workout.
The trail ends with a section of switchbacks that lead to a platform where the arch can be seen. Stretching across the rugged mountain vista, the natural arch is definitely a unique sight!
