I love Idaho’s alpine lakes. These gems are absolutely beautiful and visiting one is a summer day trip that is unforgettable. While there are many Idaho alpine lakes you can explore, one of the most stunning is Sawtooth Lake. This breathtaking body of water is located high in the Sawtooth Mountains and is surrounded by trees and jagged mountain tops. The beauty in this area is hard to compare. But, for you to enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of the area, you must be willing to put in the work. The trek to Sawtooth Lake isn’t the easiest but it will be a summer day trip in Idaho that you are bound to remember.
The hike to Sawtooth Lake is one that deserves a spot at the top of every hiker’s bucket list. To reach the lake, you’ll want to take the Iron Creek Trail, which is a five-mile one-way trail that is moderate in difficulty.
You will find the trailhead at the Iron Creek Campground, approximately six miles west of the small town of Stanley.
The trail will take you through the heart of the Sawtooth National Forest. You will often find yourself surrounded by trees and completely immersed in nature. This is a great way to feel that you escaped the real world — it’s good for the mind, body, and soul.
Be willing to give yourself plenty of breaks as you hike. Over the course of the trail, you will climb more than 1,700 feet in elevation. There are several steep areas of the climb and some inclines will be more difficult than others. Just take your time and when you need a break, stop and let the views distract you.

Speaking of the views … the scenery along this hike will mesmerize you. The jagged mountains and trees create some of the most picturesque scenery you will find in Idaho. Don't be surprised if you find yourself taking pictures every step of the way.
And once you reach the lake, be prepared to be inspired. This is one of the largest alpine lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains and it’s stunning in every single way.
If you want to turn your day trip into an overnight adventure, backpack to the lake and set up camp along its shores. There’s no better way to wake up than with this alpine lake view.
However, always be prepared for bear encounters when in the Sawtooth Mountains. Store all food in a bear box and keep bear spray with you at all times.
The hike to Sawtooth Lake via the Iron Creek Trail is going to be a trip to remember. While the journey may be challenging, every mile will be worth it.
