Most of the time, we Idahoans are proud to live in a state with so much wildlife. However, we also like to keep our distance from said wildlife when we can! According to reports by Idaho Fish and Game, there’s been a marked rise in mountain lion encounters this winter, specifically in the Wood River Valley. Scroll on to learn about what’s causing these animal encounters and what to do if you experience one yourself.
Nothing beats the beautiful scenery and outdoor opportunities that come with living in the Idaho mountains. However, mountain living also comes with plenty of risks, including dealing with wildlife.
According to officials at Idaho Fish and Game, there's been a substantial rise in mountain lion sightings and encounters. Heavy snowfall in January and an increase in moving deer and elk are believed to be the reason for the spike in encounters.
Reports have come from several southcentral Idaho communities, including the mountain towns of Featherville and Pine. Many reports have come from the Wood River Valley, as well, which consists of the communities of Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley.
Although the 2019-2020 winter season concluded with several mountain lion attacks on domestic dogs (including three fatalities), no actual attacks on people or pets have yet occurred this year. Hopefully, it stays that way!
Although seeing a mountain life firsthand should be on nobody's to-do list, there are some tips to follow if you do happen to come across one. Although beautiful, mountain lion encounters can be deadly and encountering one is serious business.
First of all, never run away from a mountain lion - they will chase you. If you do see one, back away slowly while maintaining eye contact and never turn your back on it. If an attack occurs, be sure to fight back.
Carrying safety equipment like bear spray or a noise device can also be helpful in warding off mountain lions. Some good general rules to follow: Always be aware of your surroundings, never feed wildlife, and always keep your pets close by and on a leash.
Whoa! Mountain lion encounters are no joke. Share your thoughts with us in the comments below, and stay safe out there!
