The 9-Mile Crooked River Trail Might Just Be The Most Enchanting Hike In Idaho

Idaho is a hiker’s paradise. The Gem State is home to incredible trails from waterfront paths to steep climbs that take you deep into the mountains. While there are many trails to choose from, one trail in the Boise National Forest is at the top of our list. It is the Crooked River Trail. Just north of Idaho City, this enchanting hike in Idaho is long but there are several destinations where you can stop and turn around. Plus, the trail is fairly flat and well maintained — at least for the first several miles. The Crooked River Trail in Idaho is enchanting, beautiful, and bucket-list-worthy. Lace up your hiking boots and see for yourself!
Just north of Idaho City is the Crooked River Trail. Tucked away in the Boise National Forest, this out-and-back trail is perfect for all types of hikers including families, beginning hikers, and even experienced hikers who are looking for a full-day adventure.
In total, the Crooked River Trail is nine miles but you don’t have to follow the trail in its entirety. In fact, there are several destinations along the way where you can stop, take a break, and then turn around.
For example, one of my personal favorite places to turn around is the bridge at Crooked River. It is approximately one mile to reach the bridge and this portion of the trail is quite easy and well maintained. This makes it perfect for families.
If you are willing to carry your fishing pole, you can even spend some time fishing the Crooked River. This river offers excellent fishing for cutthroat, rainbow, and brook trout.

If you choose to complete the trail in its entirety, be prepared for a bit more of a challenge. The nine-mile trail is considered moderate in difficulty as you will not only climb more than 1,000 feet in elevation but you will travel over all types of terrain.
The last four miles of this journey are going to be the most difficult. You’ll definitely want to take your time and prepare properly for the challenge.
During the summer months, you will even come across areas with gorgeous wildflowers. In the fall, the vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves are going to create quite the scene. It’s beautiful.
The Crooked River Trail is open year round but the best time to tackle the trail is from May to November. During the winter months, make sure you have proper snow gear, snowshoes, etc., before you begin your adventure.
It doesn’t matter if you tackle the entire Crooked River Trail or just a small portion, it is one enchanting hike that will mesmerize you no matter what time of the year you choose to explore.
