In addition to being one of the most populous cities in North Idaho, Coeur d’Alene is a nature lover’s paradise. Located right along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene and right outside forested areas, the city is renowned for its recreational opportunities. In fact, you can enjoy an outdoor family adventure without ever leaving town! The Mudgy Moose Trail is a storybook-inspired trail that makes for an excellent outing for kids and adults of all ages.
Have you heard of the Mudgy & Millie books, or perhaps seen them in your local bookshop? The books are published by Figpickels Press of Figpickels Toy Emporium in downtown Coeur d'Alene and they are uniquely intertwined with this beautiful North Idaho community.
Figpickels Press has been publishing the Mudgy & Millie books since 2011. The books are written by Susan Nipp, a local author who actually lives in the Coeur d'Alene region. She had the inspiration for this Idaho-centric children's book while hiking through the forest near her home!
There are currently three books in the Mudgy & Millie series. However, the story doesn't end when you turn the last page of the book. The Mudgy Moose Trail is a real outdoor walking trail that brings this adorable storybook to life.
Created in conjunction with the City of Coeur d'Alene Parks Department, the trail makes for a unique way to explore this gorgeous city with your kids. The trail begins at the base of Tubbs Hill and ends at Independence Point.
At just 2 1/4 miles, the trail is an easygoing stroll that is easy to follow and free to explore. Keep an eye out for the five life-size bronze statues located along the trail that show Mudgy Moose in his search for Millie! The signs will guide your way.
Finding each statue makes for a fun little adventure in this breathtaking waterfront city. The statues were created by internationally-acclaimed sculptor Terry Lee who is also a Coeur d'Alene resident.
What other cities in the nation do you know that have a storybook-inspired trail like this one? You'll be hard-pressed to find an adventure as charming as this one in downtown Coeur d'Alene. Learn more about the Mudgy Moose Trail and the accompanying books here.
