All across Idaho, you will find some incredible hidden gems. One of these comes in the form of a boardwalk trail in northern Idaho. The Blackwell Island Wetland Trail is where you can see wildlife, capture remarkable views of the Spokane River, and so much more. It is a true treasure near Coeur d’Alene.
The Blackwell Island Wetland Trail is found at the Blackwell Island Recreation Site near Coeur d’Alene. This little-known recreation area sits on the northwest shore of Lake CDA and is where the Spokane River meets the lake. It is a true outdoor lover’s paradise.
While there are many activities at this recreation site, particularly when it comes to the water, one true gem is the Wetland Trail, a delightful boardwalk trail that allows you to explore just a small portion of this area.
This boardwalk forms a small loop and begins near the parking lot by the boat dock. The trail is only 0.4 miles, so it is quite short and perfect for individuals of all ages. The boardwalk also makes exploring this beautiful recreation site easy for those in wheelchairs and strollers.
Along the way, you’ll come across multiple signs that will tell you a little more about the area, the animals that you may see on your walk, and the plants that thrive in the wetlands.
And if you need to take a break or you just want to sit and admire the views, there are benches on this trail where you rest and admire the natural beauty that's surrounding you.
The Blackwell Island Wetland Trail in northern Idaho is one lesser-known trail but it is perfect for an afternoon stroll or when you want to escape into nature. With views, wildlife, and easy accessibility, this is a true hidden gem in Idaho.
Be aware there is a small day-use fee to visit this recreation site and it is also only open seasonally each year. You can learn more on the Bureau of Land Management website.
