The best part of living in Idaho are all of the hidden treasures just waiting to be found and explored. This natural attraction is easily one of the most breathtaking places in Idaho…but many people have no idea that it even exists. In fact, hundreds of people drive over this natural wonder every single day totally unaware of the majestic beauty that they are passing over. It’s hard to believe such an amazing landscape is so easily overlooked. Next time you’re driving down I-84 towards Twin Falls, make sure to stop and take a look at this stunning park. Check it out.
A lot of people momentarily visit this state park without even knowing it....well, they drive over it, that is.
It may seem like there isn't much to see as you travel down I-84. You'll get a quick glimpse of the canyon and the Malad River running through it. But right underneath the bridge you're driving on is one of the most stunning natural features in Idaho...
From a different perspective, you're able to see what is called the Devil's Washbowl right underneath the highway! It's crazy to think such a gorgeous waterfall is so easily hidden from view.
Malad Gorge is one of the five units in Thousand Springs State Park. Entrance to the park is the standard $5 fee and gives you access to any of the other Thousand Springs units.
The Devil's Washbowl is a 60 feet tall waterfall that pours out into the canyon. Late April through May are usually the best time to see it since it's pouring water at full force. However, it's magnificent to gaze at all year long.
The footbridge located 175 feet above the waterfall is the ideal location for taking in the Washbowl's beauty.
Some say that Devil's Washbowl got its name from the "devil-like" face that can be seen at the washbowl's rim at the base of the waterfall.
The rest of the canyon is just as worthy of being explored after you're done gazing at the main attraction. There are other wonderful waterfalls that pour over the canyon ridge that are worth being observed, even if they aren't as impressive as the Devil's Washbowl.
The canyon itself is incredible to look at. The towering cliffs and craggy appearance is absolutely breathtaking. It's amazing to observe how the light and shadows play against the canyon walls!
Explore one of the hiking trails located around the park in order to take in all of what this beautiful park has to offer! There are numerous springs and streams with exquisitely clear water to be discovered.
Picnic facilities are available, along with many signs informing you of the canyon's unique geology, and the wildlife and plant species found in the canyon.
You'll be glad you stopped to explore this stunning area once you get a look at this incredible view! This is truly one of Idaho's hidden gems and well deserving of a visit.
Malad Gorge State Park is located approximately an hour and a half from Boise, in the Hagerman Valley. You'll find it at 1074 E. 2350 S. Hagerman, ID 83332.
