Although often referred to as Stevens Lake, the name applies to two adjoining lakes known as Upper and Lower Stevens Lake. Located not far from Lookout Pass and near the town of Mullan, finding these lakes makes for a fantastic day hike or overnight adventure.
The trail begins on an old mining road and starts to gain elevation pretty quickly. Although the trail is relatively short compared to other mountain hikes, it still contains some steep sections. Rated as moderate on AllTrails, that's still something to keep in mind.
The trail closely follows Willow Creek and it isn't long before you begin to discover the creek's many treasures. A small but gorgeous waterfall can be seen pretty early on in the hike.
You'll continue to follow the old mining road as it begins to climb up a hillside. It's here that you'll witness some spectacular views of the surrounding forest and mountain landscape, so be sure to take it all in.
As the trail begins to leave the forest, it'll cross the creek once again and bring you right to the base of a fantastic, rippling waterfall. This one is larger than the one before and the shaded area makes it a great place to stop and catch your breath for a bit.
At this point, you may be under the impression that the trail simply can't get any better. However, you'd be wrong! As you continue along the trail, you'll come across the lovely Stevens Lakes. You'll arrive first at the lower lake before meandering up to the upper lake.
Boasting vibrant blue water and surrounded completely by breathtaking mountain scenery, the lakes are simply idyllic. This hike is truly the gift that keeps on giving, so consider completing this one soon.
