The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is one of the most impressive structures in Idaho. Construction began on this magnificent building in 1906. It was officially completed and dedicated on Easter Sunday in 1921.
The cathedral was designed by one of Boise's very first architectural firms, Tourtellotte & Hummel. It was decided that the cathedral would be built in the Romanesque Revival style which was popular in Germany during the mid-19th century.
Immediately upon walking in St. John's, you are struck by the utter beauty of the place. Round wide arches, slanted windowsills, and brightly colored paintings compose the interior of the church.
The stained glass windows are truly remarkable. They are mostly made from colored glass with only the faces of the different figures painted on. All of the windows depict scenes from the life of Christ.
You'll never run out of things to gaze at in the cathedral. Beautiful plaster work portray different spiritual figures. There is even a lion which is considered the protector of the church, and gargoyles which are said to be cursed for their sins by holding up the church.
Various restoration and cleaning projects have taken place since the cathedral's early days in order to keep up the structure's awe-inspiring facade. It's by far one of the most impressive historic structures in Idaho. It was even placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
One truly incredible fact is that the cathedral's exterior is made up of Boise Sandstone— sandstone that was extracted from Table Rock right above the city. Not only is this one of the most important structures in Boise, but Boise itself helped construct this incredible place!
