Idaho is home to some of the most breathtaking mountain towns in the entire country. Ketchum is one of them — and whether you live in Idaho or are just passing through, you will certainly want to stop and explore. From beautiful landscapes to excellent places to eat, Ketchum is one of the best day trip destinations in Idaho; and in the fall, it is one trip that should be placed high on your bucket list.
Ketchum is located in central Idaho and is best-known for its proximity to Sun Valley Ski Resort. This small town has just under 3,000 residents and the most magnificent mountain scenery.
In the 1870s, the town began to flourish due to the discovery of gold. Many individuals flocked to the Ketchum and Sun Valley area to strike it rich. By the 1880s, this mountain area became a well-populated mining town.

Years later, in 1936, Count Felix Schaffgosch arrived in the area. He was searching for the best place to build a ski resort. Within three days of visiting the area, he knew the Ketchum/Sun Valley area was the place.
Today, fall is one of the best times to visit the Ketchum and Sun Valley area. During this time of year, you miss the busy winter skiers and the summer mountain bikers, giving you a more quiet, enjoyable experience. Plus, the fall foliage is absolutely breathtaking.
If the weather allows, spend your day exploring just a small portion of the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. This is 217,000 acres of land with more than 300 lakes and 40 lakes.
Once you get hungry, stop by the Pioneer Saloon, one of the best steakhouses in the area. This western-themed restaurant will satisfy your cravings and you definitely need to try the prime rib — it’s massive!

While Ketchum is truly a magnificent historic mountain town in Idaho all year long, during the autumn months, it is one of the best. When are you going to plan your visit?
