Life in Idaho is a little different. Not only from the rest of the country, but from what you might expect of an agricultural state. Here, there are words and phrases only we can understand, pastimes only we find enjoyment in, and questions only we know the answers to…
1. "You must eat a lot of potatoes, huh?"
Well yeah. But doesn't everybody? It's literally the most important vegetable/tuber/deliciously starchy carb ever from which all heaven-sent snack foods are made.
2. "How far away is that?"
Our answer will typically be in terms of hours. As in, above two, but less than ten. Our major cities are pretty spread out here!
3. "Why are you wearing shorts when it's only 30 degrees outside?"
I think the better question is: why are you wearing so many layers when the sun is shining?
4. "Do you know my Uncle Jim?"
Maybe I do, maybe I don't. I've met quite a few Uncle Jims. But you can bet I at least know his cousin's sister's niece. As spread out as we are, we're a close-knit state!
5. "What's a huckleberry?"
A tiny, juicy drop of edible sunshine, that's what. Perfect in ice cream, pies, cobblers, drinks, salads...
6. "When are you going to get a new one?"
When this one stops running. Problem, bro?
7. "Is it really hot there?"
Is the sky blue? YES. But without the blessed shade of yonder coastal palm trees. We just tough it out here.
8. "Did you know Napoleon Dynamite was filmed there?"
Is that even a question?
9. "Have you ever seen a moose/bear/(some other wild animal)?"
Probably. Just don't let it see you first.
10. "Why Idaho of all places?"
Because it's gorgeous. Because the idea of multi-level interstates is a concept that sounds worse than death. Because small town life is flippin' sweet. I can go on...
11. "But, what's there to do there?"
Trust me, there aren't enough weekends in a lifetime to do everything on my bucket list.
12. "Would you ever leave?"
In a word, no. But once you experience the beauty and adventure and friendliness that is the Gem State, chances are you won't want to leave either.
