For limitless hiking options and epic Gem State scenery, Eastern Idaho is all too often overlooked. But tucked away in Swan Valley, the Palisades Creek trail is perfect in every season. Wildflowers, changing leaves, abundant wildlife, and two pristine mountain lakes will capture your heart. But while visitors to the area are often captivated by the sub-alpine lakes, there’s something simple and idyllic about the special, winding creek setting near Idaho’s border that is equally special… not to mention the breathtaking waterfall canyon! It’s the absolute perfect family-friendly hike.
The tiny town of Swan Valley is a rustic, scenic gateway to some of Idaho's most overlooked landscapes and attractions.
Nestled alongside Idaho Falls and home to only 200 residents, it's easy to miss this hidden gem of a community. But don't!
From cattle drives and horseback riding to fly-fishing and breathtaking hiking, there's no end to the amazing beauty and adventure you'll find here.
The area is one stunning vista after another.
Breathtakingly beautiful, the Upper and Lower Palisades Lakes are a crowning jewel tucked away on the Idaho-Wyoming border.
These scenic lakes rest quietly in the shadow of the Tetons and on the edge of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
The lower lake is a popular hiking and camping destination, while the upper lake requires more stamina to reach.
As you can see, both are undeniably worth the effort!
These gorgeous mountain lakes often overshadow the very creek that winds beside the trail... but maybe they shouldn't!
Palisades Creek is a scenic wonderland for those who choose to explore it, hidden in plain sight.
The water is as clear as glass, enabling you to see every fish that swims by.
The trout fishing is particularly incredible here! The creek runs between Idaho Falls and the border before emptying into the South Fork of the Snake River just shy of the Palisades Dam.
The rugged nature trail over and alongside the creek is only open to foot traffic, mountain bikes, and horses.
In the summer, this tree-lined trail offers plenty of shade, while autumn showcases incredibly vibrant fall foliage.
If camping isn't your thing, the Palisades Lodge offers quaint cabins that have easy access to everything the valley has to offer.
Did I mention the trail continues to a stunning waterfall canyon?

If you choose to continue on to the falls, the trail is a lengthy and strenuous one at totals over 23 miles round-trip.
But no matter how you choose to explore this gem, be sure to take a few moments to stop and simply drink in the scenery.
