Did you know that Idaho is home to some of the oldest cedar trees? Located in northern Idaho and near the small town of Clarkia is the Hobo Cedar Grove Botanical Area, an ancient grove of cedar trees that is secluded, remarkable, and breathtaking. You can spend the day hiking around this cedar grove in the Gem State and believe us, you’ll be blown away by the age, size, and beauty of this area.
Welcome to the Hobo Cedar Grove Botanical Area. This is a 240-acre grove of large Western Red Cedar Trees.
However, it isn’t only the beauty that will attract you to this area, but the age of the trees will as well. Many of these cedar trees were seedlings in the late 1400s, making them more than 500 years old today.
You can spend the entire day at the beautiful Hobo Cedar Grove Botanical Area in Idaho. There is a 0.5-mile nature trail that will take you through a portion of the grove.
This trail has a slight incline but it is still quite easy and accessible for many hikers and those with slight mobility impairments.
At the trailhead, a small box provides brochures that will take you on a self-guided tour of this remarkable cedar grove. You will find numbered paragraphs in the brochure that coincide with posts along the nature trail.
As you walk, you will not only see some of the oldest trees in Idaho, but you will also come across dense carpets of lady fern, small streams, and an occasional log bench if you just want to sit, relax, and enjoy the solitude of the area.
There are additional hiking trails in the area that are a bit more difficult and will take you to other areas of the cedar grove. You will also find picnic areas and an on-site toilet. It truly is the perfect day trip destination in Idaho.
