Spring has finally settled in and Summer is just around the corner. That means it’s time to start planning what swimming spots you’d like to visit this year. There are the popular spots like Redfish Lake, Bear Lake, etc. but they fill up fast. If you’re the type of person who likes their space, it may be worth it to hike to one of Idaho’s many hidden mountain lakes for a private swimming spot. Of course, you don’t have to swim to enjoy the incredible beauty that is waiting for you at the end of this hiking trail. There’s something kind of magical about this hidden lake tucked away in the heart of the Targhee National forest and it makes for the perfect place to fish, camp, or just stare at. This one definitely belongs on your bucket list.
Located in the Targhee National Forest near Irwin, Idaho is the Upper Palisades Lake Trail. This trail actually leads you to both the lower and upper Palisades Lakes while leading you through a scenic forested area. The trail is well-maintained and a popular adventure among locals.
The trail is 13 miles out-and-back, so be sure to plan an entire day for this hike. It may be long but the trail is very well-maintained and doesn't have much of an elevation gain, so it can definitely be accomplished by both seasoned and non-seasoned hikers.
This hike is incredibly picturesque. The trail closely follows the gorgeous Palisades Creek while going in and out through patches of trees. You'll come across a series of delightful bridges where the trail crosses the creek.
Late spring to early summer is an excellent time to do this trail because that's when the creek's flows are really at their best. There's nothing like taking a quick break from hiking to dip your toes in the rushing creek water.
You'll come upon Lower Palisades Lake first. It's quite small, but still very beautiful as it is completely surrounded by tree-covered mountains. This lake is popular when it's warm out. However, the Upper Lake is usually less crowded so keep hiking!
As you continue up the trail, you'll come across an old cabin along the banks of the creek. Inside you'll find a small bunk and a stove, but there are signs that say camping is prohibited.
After a few more miles you'll come across the real treasure of this hiking trail: Upper Palisades Lake. The lake is huge and contains the most stunning blue water.
As you get closer you'll see that the water is crystal clear. The lake is supposed to contain some great fishing and the water temperature is perfect for a hot day.
It's this view at the end that makes you realize that the long hike was worth it. Words and photographs simply can't do justice to the epic beauty that is Upper Palisades Lake. This is definitely one that you're going to remember for years to come.
You'll find the trailhead off of Highway 26 past the town of Palisades. After you pass the town, you'll turn right onto Palisades Road. After approximately two miles you'll come upon a Forest Service campground and parking lot where the trailhead is located.
