Seeing it for yourself is a must so make it your mission to seek it out soon!
Hiding in downtown Boise is a truly notable art gallery, but it may not be the type of gallery you're expecting. Freak Alley is the definition of a hidden gem and seeing it is something that every Idahoan should experience at least once.
Freak Alley is a Boise institution. First established in 2002 by a man named Colby Akers, the alley seems to grow with each year, and it's currently bigger and better than ever. In fact, it's known as the largest outdoor gallery in the Northwest.
It all began with painting a single alley doorway. Nobody would've guessed that the mural would eventually stretch for two entire blocks, and even branch into the connecting gravel parking lot!
The project began as a way for businesses to make the back of their building look more attractive. The famous Moon's Cafe was the first business to ask Akers to paint the side of their building, and other businesses soon followed one by one.
Freak Alley Gallery is much more than a place for graffiti artists to express themselves. It's a true art gallery that's meant to showcase the talent of both local and traveling artists.
The gallery is always changing, ensuring you have a unique experience every time you visit it. In general, murals are painted over and replaced by new murals every two years. As of right now, the gallery is the collective work of more than 200 artists.
Freak Alley's beginnings may have been humble, but the gallery has made some big changes in recent years. In 2018, the alley received a major renovation for half-a-million dollars, proving that the arts community in Boise is definitely alive and well.
Freak Alley Gallery is open to the public 24/7 and admission is completely free. Whether you're just passing through or you find yourself taking your time lot look at each mural, a visit to this iconic Boise destination never fails to inspire.
