With spring just weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about all the outdoor activities you’d like to accomplish to celebrate the new season’s arrival. Personally, I can’t wait to get out and back on the trail. There’s one hike, in particular, that should be on everybody’s radar this spring. It boasts a little bit of everything. Stunning forest views, hidden beach, and even Maiden Rock—a stunning geologic wonder—await you at the end of this trail. Best of all, it’s easily accessible and mostly flat, which means almost anybody can experience it. See it for yourself and be sure to add it to your hiking bucket list!
Every hike in Idaho seems to offer a unique adventure, but this particular hike is especially notable for several reasons. The trail itself is lovely, but it's where this trail leads you that will leave you in awe.
Located near the town of Cocolalla, this well-marked Forest Service trail can be found within the Kaniksu National Forest. Parking is available at the Blacktail Mountain trail head.
The trail is just a mere two miles each way, but don't let the short length fool you. This hike packs a lot in! Although there are some uphill hiking and rocky terrain, the trail is classified as moderate and manageable for most skill levels.
As soon as you hop onto the Maiden Rock Trail (#321), you'll be led straight into dense thickets of cedar forest. You'll stroll along the wide trail for around a quarter mile before it begins to narrow along the side of Blacktail Mountain.
You'll then follow the trail as it leads you downhill, across Maiden Creek, and past a ravine. The area is simply stunning, no matter what time of year. You can't help but feel like you've entered your own little oasis.
Soon enough, you'll arrive at the destination for which the trail is named: Maiden Rock. The trail leads you straight down to a private pebble beach, and Maiden Rock towers over you at the end of the shoreline.
The views from the beach are downright gorgeous and you'll want to spend some time soaking it all in. The huge granite formation known as Maiden Rock just completes the picturesque scenery.
