Tucked away in the panhandle and just a short drive from Moscow is Troy, a small town in Idaho that is a true hidden gem. With outdoor opportunities galore, history, and more, this is one funky little town in Idaho that’s pretty much awesome in every way.
The community of Troy is located in the beautiful Palouse Region. This small town sits east of Moscow and nearly 1,000 people call it home.
Troy dates back to the 1800s. This small Idaho town was settled by Scandinavian immigrants and was originally known as Huff’s Gulch. After several name changes, the town name was officially changed to Troy after a Greek railroad worker suggested the name and offered a drink of whiskey for everyone who voted for the change.
By the early 1900s, the town flourished and had numerous businesses including a bank, two meat markets, multiple saloons, a dentist, newspaper, and more.
Today, as you explore the town of Troy, you’ll still see evidence of its unique history. Take a walk down Main Street and explore several of its local shops and businesses.

Troy is also a wonderful place if you want to spend some time outdoors. This small town is surrounded by trees and the rolling hills of the Palouse. It is certainly a picturesque small town in Idaho.
This beautiful reservoir is home to the Spring Valley Reservoir Loop Trail, a 1.7-mile trail that takes you all around the reservoir. You’ll hike through trees and to stunning water views. You may even spot some wildlife along your way.
If you are up for a big adventure, hop on the Latah Trail. This paved path will take you all the way from Troy to Moscow and it’s the perfect trail for a bike ride or even a very long run.
