The coronavirus pandemic has affected nearly every single aspect of daily life for people around the globe. Not only have businesses been forced to make big changes to the way they do things these days, but some are truly hurting as demand for products has gone down. Many Idaho businesses are feeling the strain, including farms. In fact, Cranney Farms in Oakley is giving away two million potatoes so that they don’t go to waste. It may be due to unfortunate circumstances, but this generous act definitely won’t go unnoticed. So, swing by and get your free potatoes while they’re available!
The coronavirus situation has put countless businesses on hold as stay-at-home orders have severely affected demand for certain things, including potatoes. It's a tough situation for Idaho farmers, but Oakley's Cranney Farms is trying to make the best of it.
With demand for crops down substantially since stay-at-home orders started going into effect, many farms are being forced to throw away food. However, Cranney Farms is taking a different route. They've opted to give away two million potatoes to anybody who wants them.
Located in Oakley, approximately 150 miles from Boise, the majority of Cranney Farms' potato crops are sold to either grocery stores or restaurants. With many restaurants shutting down around the state, Cranney Farms is having a hard time finding a place to offload their potatoes.
It's unfortunate for sure, but Cranney Farms won't let their precious potatoes go to waste. Earlier this week, the CEO of Cranney Farms, Ryan Cranney, posted on Facebook that anybody in the community was welcome to stop by and take as many potatoes as they want.
It turns out Cranney's post reached a lot more people than he expected, as Idahoans have started coming from all over the state to grab some free potatoes. In fact, some non-Idahoans have even made the trip! Many potatoes are also going to food banks and soup kitchens.
This one generous act shows that no matter how tough times get, Idahoans always have a way of helping each other out. Come get your potatoes before they're all gone!
