For many (if not most) Idahoans, summer means packing up the trailer or tent and heading into the Idaho wilderness for another camping adventure. Campgrounds are a dime a dozen here, and it can be exhausting trying to choose one. But most people aren’t aware that they can transform their camping experience into something truly unique by renting one of Idaho’s fire lookout towers. It’s only relatively recently that the U.S. Forest Service decided to start renting out the towers to campers, but it’s already proven to be quite the hit!

These fire lookout towers were designed specifically to provide the best view of the surrounding forestry so that forest rangers could quickly report any wildfires they observed. So far, Idaho has 10 lookout towers available for campers to rent, mostly in northern Idaho.

Some towers are pretty easily accessible. However, some require a small hike to get to. The towers are available to rent from June through September, but they get reserved fast so plan ahead!

The inside of the tower is relatively spacious, containing two cots and fitting up to four people. You are also provided with cooking dishes, a propane lantern, a table with two chairs, a propane camp stove, and a wood stove. An outhouse is also provided, but no water so be sure to pack your own!

Many of the towers haven't been used by rangers since the 1980's and some date back to being built in the 1930's! All lookout towers have been restored and renovated to ensure they are safe for guests to use.

The lookouts sit at an elevation between 5,000 and 6,000 feet depending on the specific lookout, so they boast spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding scenery. Can you imagine waking up to this?
