Who said camping was solely for summer? Fall camping is vastly underrated, and is something that every Idahoan should experience. Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year in the Gem State and there’s no better way of experiencing all the beauty these months have to offer us than by taking one last camping trip before the snow starts in. Idaho is home to dozens of breathtaking campgrounds, some of which are open all year round and are perfect for an Autumn outdoor adventure. The weather is cooler, the crowds are smaller, and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous…what’s not to love? Check out these picture perfect fall campgrounds, but be sure to call ahead because hours and dates of operation vary from campground to campground.
1. Lake Walcott State Park
This state park is open year round and is located within the Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge. The abundant wildlife along with the lake scenery makes for a beautiful campground backdrop. In the fall, the vibrant colors pop along the treetops. It doesn't get more serene than this.
2. Winchester Lake State Park
Winchester Lake State Park is a beautiful area located just 35 miles south of Lewiston. Yurts are available if you don't feel like a tent, and there are plenty of hiking options around the gorgeous lake that offer incredible views of Craig Mountain. The park even contains a Wolf Education Center where you can observe real, living wolves in their habitats!
3. Palisades Creek Campground
Palisades Creek Campground is located within a dense forest landscape. This first come-first served campground is simply stunning. One of the greatest features of this campsite is access to one of Idaho's most popular hiking trails to the Upper and Lower Palisades Lakes.
4. Priest Lake State Park
Priest Lake is one of the most majestic sights in the Gem State. Nestled right underneath the Selkirk Mountains, the state park is located right along the eastern shore of Priest Lake. Priest Lake is a breathtaking sight no matter what time of year it is, but especially during the fall. There's nothing like breathing in the fresh, crisp lake air on a cool fall morning!
5. Three Island State Park
Three Island State Park is a popular, year round campground that is located right along the Snake River. Although it is located in a high desert area, there are plenty of grassy and shady areas throughout the park. The area is absolutely beautiful, but the history behind it is what makes this place so unique. The Oregon Trail History and Education Center is a must stop when you visit the park!
6. Idaho City Yurts
Idaho City offers six backcountry yurts available for year-round rental. The yurts offer a certain amount of comfort while staying true to the camping experience. They also offer sweet solitude in the peaceful Idaho wilderness. A fall getaway to one of these yurts is all you could ever want in a camping experience.
7. Little Redfish Lake
This area attracts hundreds, even thousands, of visitors during the summer time. Fall is the perfect time to experience Little Redfish Lake in all of it's glory since the summer crowds are gone. Many of the campgrounds are situated right on the shores of the lake and offer incredible views of the Sawtooths. A lot of the campgrounds close in September, but Sockeye Campground is open throughout the Fall.
