It’s no secret that Idaho is a utopia for hikers and climbers. Our endless amount of trails always guarantees a new place to be explored. And most people would agree that the absolute best trails are the ones not so easily accessible. This hike is a local favorite, and isn’t actually recognized by the Forest Service, so there isn’t a ton of information about it (that’s easily available, at least). However, that doesn’t limit it from being one of the most popular hikes in the Sawtooth Mountains.
This is a very popular hike among locals because of the majestic view that it leads you to. Elephant’s Perch, formally called Saddleback Peak, offers one of the best panoramic views in the entire state and people flock to this spot to get a glimpse of it.
Elephant's Perch is characterized by its eye-catching gold/orange color. Three of the peak's faces are steep, flat drop-offs which makes this one of the most dramatic peaks in the Sawtooths.
Although it's not an official trail, that doesn't stop many locals from making the trek to the top for one of the most fantastic mountain views in all of Idaho. A popular starting point is accessed by shuttling via boat across Redfish Lake to the inlet campground.
This is easily one of the most sought after hikes in the Sawtooth wilderness. It's not uncommon to see several parties of hikers camping out and making the climb.
Although rated as quite difficult, the hike actually gets easier as you continue on...so don't give up! One of the most breathtaking views of your life is just a short distance away. At the top, you'll have an absolutely jaw-dropping view of the Saddleback lakes and the surrounding forest. It's unlike any other peak in the world.
The surrounding lakes make for the perfect place to camp out after you return from this epic hike. It's recommended to schedule out at least a couple days for this adventure in order to provide an ample amount of time to take in the immensely beautiful scenery!
