We love our hot springs here in Idaho, but some have become quite popular and crowded. Fortunately, there are still some dreamy places to relax and soak while staying away from other people. Bear Creek Hot Springs, located in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and near Palisades Reservoir, is one of these places. You’ll have a long 13-mile hike ahead of you but the reward at the end is so worth the journey.
Bear Creek Hot Springs is certainly dreamy. While there is a 13-mile out-and-back trail to reach the warm pool, the trek can be quite intimidating, resulting in fewer crowds and more peace and quiet for you on the journey.
This is considered a harder trek as there are some steeper areas you must climb. However, most of the climb is near the end of the trail and you can always take breaks as needed.
This trail follows Bear Creek and you will cross the water multiple times on your journey. You may want to bring an extra pair of shoes for these areas of the trail.
However, there is an upper and lower section of this trail. If you want to stay dry, consider the upper section as you will avoid all of the stream crossings but this option is considered much harder.
You’ll also want to bring a hat and lots of sunscreen as there is little shade along this trail. Fortunately, the creek can cool you off along your way.
Always bring bear spray with you as well. Many bear sightings have been reported along this trail.
If hiking, this is typically a quiet trail and you may not see other hikers on your journey. However, don't be surprised if you see mountain bikers and horseback riders who are out for an adventure.
Once you reach the hot springs, be prepared for a remarkable sight. The Bear Creek Hot Springs are quite large and the water is typically clear and beautiful.
