The Snake River Canyon in southeast Idaho is home to all sorts of amazing hidden treasures. From the Snake River itself to the brilliant Shoshone Falls, there’s always an adventure to be had when exploring this majestic canyon. One adventure that’s worth seeking out is the Dierkes Lake Trail near the south rim of the canyon. This short and easy trail takes you entirely around the gorgeous body of water that is Dierkes Lake. It makes for a serene adventure in a lesser-known part of this famous canyon, so check it out for your next outing.
Located less than a mile from the popular Shoshone Falls, Dierkes Lake is a spectacular body of water nestled within the walls of the Snake River Canyon. In addition to being regarded as a fantastic summertime swimming hole, the lake also makes for an awesome hiking destination.
Circling the lake for 2.8-miles, traversing the Dierkes Lake Trail is a great outdoor adventure. The easygoing loop trail descends from the south rim of the canyon before leading you on a solitary journey around the lake's waters.
To get to the trailhead from Twin Falls, drive east on Falls Avenue East and turn north on 3400 East. Follow this road until it comes to a dead end with a small gravel parking lot for the trail. You can also park at Dierkes Lake Park, but that requires paying the $3 toll at the Shoshone Falls Grade.
The beginning of the trail makes a rapid descent into the canyon while boasting a spectacular view of Dierkes Lake and the smaller lakes that surround it. Although located near a residential area, the trail has a way of immediately immersing you in the sights and sounds of the canyon's natural setting.
After you've reached the bottom of the canyon, the wide gravel trail will then lead you around the south side of Dierkes Lake. The lake is a popular place to be in the summertime, yet the trail feels perfectly serene.
You'll discover all sorts of incredible sights on the trail, including waterfalls, rugged outcroppings, and smaller trails that lead to surrounding lakes. With very little elevation gain besides the canyon descent, the trail is a breeze. Just be aware that there is little to no shade on the trail, so a good hat and sunscreen are a must.
The trail around Dierkes Lake is a lesser-known adventure in the Snake River Canyon, but it's one that's definitely worth seeking out. Afterward, you can cool off in the hidden lake's blissful blue waters.
