There are many remarkable discoveries made in Idaho, but one that has created more questions than answers is the Nampa Image. This little figurine, discovered in the summer of 1889, has caused much controversy, interest, and confusion. In fact, this discovery has stirred up so much confusion that many people believe this figurine is one of the greatest hoaxes in Idaho history.
In July 1889, a small human figurine was discovered during a well-drilling operation in Nampa. It was found at a remarkable depth of 320 feet.
One interesting fact about this discovery is that nothing of its kind has ever been found this deep in North America.
After much research, there was no doubt this doll was made by humans. But, what made this discovery so interesting is that the figurine dates back to a time before man was estimated to live in this part of the world.
This unique figurine looks like a doll and is quite small — only 48 mm tall — and one of the legs is broken. The Nampa Image, also known as the Nampa Doll, is made out of clay and there are slight geometric markings on its chest.
Many individuals believe this figurine is an ancient artifact, while others say it is a toy similar to what Native American children would play with. Over the years, it has caused much controversy in the scientific community as experts have tried to learn all they can about where this figurine came from and what it actually is.
Today, the Nampa Image is located in the Idaho State Historical Society Museum in Boise. Due to its fragile condition, experts are taking extra care to protect and preserve the figurine.
No matter what you believe, the Nampa Doll is one unique discovery in Idaho and has certainly left many archaeologists and other scientific experts scratching their heads.
