It’s no secret that driving during the wintertime can be a hassle. Once-simple drives can be made extra strenuous when winter comes along with the arrival of snow and ice. It doesn’t help that Idaho was recently named one of the most dangerous places for winter driving by SafeWise. It can be scary out there, so everybody should always take extreme caution when traversing the roads this winter. However, there’s one highway, in particular, that is known as the most dangerous road not just in Idaho, but the entire country. You may want to reconsider driving on it this winter season and find an alternative route instead.

What are some of the most dangerous towns in Idaho?

We have some good news: the crime rates in Idaho have been steadily dropping for years now – since 2005, to be specific. Overall, it’s a pretty safe place to be! When it comes to violent crime, the vast majority of victims know or knew their attackers; the chances of being the victim of a random violent crime are almost zero ‘round here. That being said, there are still cities and towns with higher crime rates than others; some of the most dangerous towns in Idaho include Garden City, where 53 violent crimes were reported in 2021. Next is Pocatello, where there were more than 1,300 property crimes reported. The third most dangerous town in Idaho is Twin Falls, which ranks third in violent crime in the state (likely thanks to the tourism industry and folks coming and going a lot). Overall, though, Idaho ranks as the 42nd-most dangerous state – which isn’t bad at all! Nearly anywhere you can live in Idaho is still going to be safer than the majority of the United States.

What are some dangerous places to avoid in Idaho?

Other than the “dangerous” cities and towns, there are plenty of natural places and outdoor locations that tend to be a little more dangerous than the rest, like some of our highways as detailed in this article. Idaho is home to some pretty dangerous critters, like buffalo, bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. Occasionally, Idaho can experience a doozy of a winter storm, which can be exceedingly dangerous depending on the specific conditions. Extreme cold is also a danger here, and flooding can be a problem during the summer months, especially in riverbed areas and other lowlands. You’ll also want to steer clear of places where poisonous plants grow, because there’s a population of poison hemlock out there somewhere. Idaho might be sleepy, but beware – there's danger lurking around every corner! Okay, maybe not really... but be safe out there anyway, y’hear?
