One of Idaho’s most unique parks, Craters of the Moon National Monument is best known for its stark landscape and volcanic features. But come wintertime, the park becomes blanketed in snow for as far as the eye can see. The once rugged scenery turns into a pristine wonderland, and it makes for a picture-perfect winter adventure. Make it your mission to visit Craters of the Moon this winter season and see this national monument in a whole new light.
Consisting of lava flows, cinder cones, and endless sagebrush, the landscape of Craters of the Moon is somewhat hypnotizing in its rugged nature. And once the snow begins to fall, you'll see the park takes on an entirely new appearance.
Although some park features do close down during the winter season, other areas are allowed to shine during this time of year. If you're up for a scenic winter adventure, rest assured that there's a lot of snowy fun to be had here!
As the snow and ice begins to accumulate, the Loop Road closes to vehicles. Instead, it opens up for skiing and snowshoeing! From around mid-December until the snow lets up, visitors can walk or ski the 7-mile road instead of driving on it. There are no entry or user fees for the road.
If you're looking for something a little shorter and more beginner-friendly, set your sights on the Snowshoe Loop Trail. This is a 1.5-mile trail through the monument that starts near the visitor center and campground. Just follow the orange snow poles to stay on path.
If you're a skier, you'll love traversing the slopes of the park's various cinder cones. Skiers are welcome to venture off the groomed track to carve some turns across these volcanic features. Afterwards, you can officially say that you've skied on a volcano!
The visitor center remains open in winter, although the exhibits and theater are closed. You can stop by the visitor center and adjoined bookstore daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
