Idaho is home to dozens of charming farming communities. Big and small, these towns are the heart and soul of the Gem State. However, located in southern Idaho is the small town of Preston, a charming farm town that is truly the perfect place to get away from it all.

Preston, Idaho claims to be one of the best-kept secrets of the West and we have to agree. Located across the Idaho state line in Cache Valley, this farming community with approximately 5,200 residents is delightful in every way.

Not only are there farmlands all around this town and the surrounding area, but on each side of this town, mountains provide incredible views.

This small town dates back to 1868 when the first permanent residence was built in the area by Dennis W. Winn. Many individuals who came to this area and settled in the 1880s were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Originally, the area was known as Worm Creek, but in May 1881, a special meeting was held to change the name as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not like the word "worm" being associated with the church. The name Preston was suggested, in honor of William B. Preston, a church leader in the area.
Today, as you drive around town, you’ll still see evidence of this pioneer history in much of the architecture and other features around town.

One well-known historic building in Preston is the Oneida Stake Academy, located on the northeast corner of Preston Community Park. This three-story building was constructed in the 1890s and served as a school for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
When you want to get away from reality, Preston is a delightful place to be. Take a drive along the Pioneer Historic Byway, which takes you to many historic sites including original wheel ruts from pioneers traveling on the Oregon Trail.
