Bruneau Canyon certainly doesn’t the receive the attention it deserves when it comes to Idaho’s main scenic attractions. When it comes to canyons in the Gem State, it’s usually places like Hells Canyon or the Snake River Canyon that are spotlighted the most. This needs to change. Thanks to this short hiking trail, it’s never been easier to take in the expansive views that the Bruneau Canyon Overlook has to offer. When you arrive at the overlook after this brief hike, you’ll be treated to some of the most epic scenes that will make you feel like you’re on top of the world. This is a must for all Idahoans.
Hiding in the middle of a vast and desolate desert plain is one of Idaho's greatest treasures: the Bruneau Canyon Overlook. Due to its isolated location, it's no wonder the canyon has remained a (massive) hidden gem.
The drive to the trail couldn't be any more remote. From the town of Bruneau, you'll drive down a dirt road for roughly 20 miles before coming to the parking lot for the overlook.
The canyon is almost invisible until you're right on top of it. As you hike closer and closer to the rim, you'll be in total awe at what's waiting for you.
The overlook contains a well-maintained area complete with railing and some informational signs. It isn't until you approach the very rim of the canyon that you can truly observe the nearly 1,000-foot vertical drop into the canyon.
You'll definitely want to take some time to explore beyond the viewpoint and hike around the canyon's rim. You'll notice several parts of the trail contain fences to keep you from walking straight off the rim. If you have a fear of heights, you may feel a bit queasy looking into the canyon's depths.
The trail itself isn't all that challenging. During the summer, the main thing to look out for is rattlesnakes. Be sure to bring plenty of water as well since there is little to no shade to be found.
Bruneau Canyon is truly one of Idaho's most spectacular wonders. It may not be the deepest or the biggest, but the sight of the canyon's rocky walls plunging down at a nearly vertical grade is almost heart-stopping.
Non-Idahoans almost always have no clue that Bruneau Canyon even exists. That's just fine by us. We'd like to keep this jaw-dropping sight all to ourselves.
