15 Ways Idaho Is America's Black Sheep... And We Love It That Way

Everyone who calls Idaho home knows that we do things a little differently around here. We tend to live by our own rules and not really care what others think about it; fitting in isn’t really our thing. But that’s exactly what makes Idaho such an incredible place to be. If you don’t believe me, just see for yourself… here are 15 ways Idaho is America’s “black sheep.”
1. North and South Idaho are like two different worlds.
With two very different reactions to snow...
And heat.
2. We'll drive just about anything... so long as it gets us from point A to point B.
4-wheelers, tractors, horses, lawn mowers...
3. We have too many unincorporated towns for even the state to keep track of.
Have you ever looked at the official list? I'll be you can name at least a dozen that are missing.
4. While the rest of the country argues over whether to give directions in hours or number of miles, we just use the only stoplight in town as a landmark.
The stoplight. Singular.
5. We think learning is a hands-on experience.
Gettin' dirty and scuffed up is the what the best childhoods are made of.
6. We can visit Paris without having to travel overseas.
And Oxford too, in case you were wondering!
7. We know that girls can shoot just as good as boys.
True story.
8. But Idaho dads are perfect shots.
Especially when they have pretty daughters.
9. We believe in making conversation with strangers.
Idahoans are of the friendly sort!
10. We can go to the beach, climb a mountain, dive into a swimming hole, play on a ranch, and go ice fishing all in the same day.
Depending on the season, of course.
11. We like our food simple and rustic: meat and potatoes, without the frills.
Well..maybe a few frills.
12. A cabin in the woods is really all we need to be happy.
This is our dream vacation right here.
13. We don't really do big cities here.
Boise is by far the biggest city in the state with 210,000 people. Without the capital, Idaho's average town size is less than 5,000 people.
14. And we're perfectly okay with people not knowing where Idaho is.
In fact, we like to pretend Idaho isn't as beautiful and amazing as it actually is to keep people from moving here.
15. Idaho, where?
What do you think? Is Idaho pretty singular, or what?
