Idaho is an idyllic, year-round playground for adventure-seekers, but come winter and all of the beauty that mountains of fresh-fallen snow have to offer, there’s even more to love about our state. From over 300 miles of Nordic trails and world-class skiing to epic festivals and breathtaking snow-capped vista views, the things to see and do are endless. But what better getaway or basecamp for any of Idaho’s best winter activities than a backcountry yurt?
Here in the Gem State, we have cozy, romantic huts nestled along frozen lakes – perfect for ice fishing, ice skating, or enjoying from behind the glow of a warm fire – and yurts with wood-fired saunas, hot tubs, and pristine winter beauty. Some require hardcore skiing or snowshoeing to get to, while others offer private, year-round access. But no matter your preference, they’re all absolutely magical. And they’re all worth a visit!
1. Cygnet and Wyethia Yurts, Harriman State Park
Harriman State Park in Island Park is particularly known for its fat biking trails in the winter, but these two updated yurts make the perfect basecamp for whatever activities your heart desires in every season. And in eastern Idaho's geologic playground, there's plenty to choose from! Yurts come furnished with a wood stove and bunk beds, plus a water supply nearby.

3. Blue Moon Yurt, Ponderosa State Park
Perhaps the most unique getaway yurt on our list, this beauty isn't a basecamp at all; it's a multi-course catered meal and community experience that will completely wow you. And believe me when I say this is no rustic ol' dutch oven cooking! This is true gourmet, but how Blue Moon Outfitters makes it happen is simply incredible. The trek is a short one-mile excursion (snowshoes/skis required) and the roaring fire that awaits you creates all the ambiance of a million candles. How's that for dining under the stars?

Hosted by Payette Powder Guides, these backcountry yurts offer remarkable views and even more spectacular opportunities for adventure. These yurts are only accessible by snowmobile, to keep the powder fresh for skiers, but PPG also offers private rentals of these beauties after a hosted introductory yurt course.

6. Williams Peak Hut, Sawtooths
Williams Peak is a rugged, challenging mountain destination for recreation-lovers of every skill set, making this historic yurt a truly remote and exhilarating experience far away from the likes of civilization. Novices are able to book a guide to get here, or hoof it on their own after a reservation. Bonus points because a sunset here is just about perfect.

7. Stargaze Yurt, Idaho City
After 2016's devastating Pioneer fire, much of Idaho City's phenomenal yurt system was severely damaged in the wake. Only two of the city's renowned yurts are still available to rent: the Stargaze, and Banner Ridge. Both offer vista overlooks, with plenty of amenities to keep you feeling at home, but just the right amount of remoteness to keep those star-gazing opportunities at their peak. The short, 2-3 mile hikes make these yurts accessible to just about everyone, and both house 6 comfortably.

8. Bench Hut, Mt. Heyburn
Another basecamp hosted by Sun Valley Trekking, unique enough to warrant its own listing, this vintage angled hut breaks the mold of traditional circular yurts in favor of a cozier family-style experience. A wood-fired sauna, multiple fireplaces, basic kitchen, and more are all provided in this totally modern tent-style abode.

9. Purple, Orange, and Green Yurts, Sandpoint
Three distinct yurts, tucked away on nearly 100 acres of wooded, riverfront property offer romantic, luxurious glamping possibilities without the hike or need to book a guided tour. Just snag a reservation and enjoy the trees, meadows, and water views in a smaller, cozier abode than traditional large-group yurts. Each hut offers something slightly different, so be sure to check each of them out!
