We Idahoans pride ourselves in our sense of adventure. There’s simply no journey too big or too far away that we aren’t willing to take on. In fact, it’s these big adventures that always seem to pay off the most. This backcountry hike is a great example. Tucked away in the Selkirk Mountains, this hike is actually pretty short, but it will take you deep into a region of wilderness that will blow you away. This breathtaking alpine lake is located approximately 2.5-hours outside of Coeur d'Alene. It takes some effort to find the trailhead, but it's well-worth it. Just remember the awe-inspiring view that awaits!
To get there, you'll drive east on Shore Road from the southern end of Priest Lake. You'll turn right onto a Forest Road immediately after crossing Hunt Creek. From here, you'll keep driving for around 45 minutes before reaching the trailhead.
The trailhead sits above Hunt Creek and boasts an outstanding view of Priest Lake in the distance. From here, you'll set off on the trail. It's pretty rugged, but trail markers have been placed for you to follow. Just follow the red dots on the rocks and the ribbons.
The trail is just two miles but you'll want to prepare for some boulder hopping. It can also be steep in some sections so be sure to take your time and enjoy the surroundings.
You'll instantly be glad you made the effort to get out here once you get the first glimpse of Hunt Lake in the distance. Surrounded by mountains, the trail treats you to a breathtaking birds-eye-view of this lovely alpine lake.
Keep going on the trail and you'll be led to the lake's wonderful waters. This place is as wild as it gets, with the exception of a few primitive camping spots, and it's absolute bliss.
