You never know what type of strange landscapes you’ll come across right here in Idaho. From canyons and desert to forest and mountains, there’s a little bit of everything throughout the Gem State. Southern Idaho especially is home to some unique landscapes, including the one featured here. Hiding out in the middle of nowhere, this hiking trail will lead you straight to a landscape filled with ancient rocks, the likes of which are unlike anything you’ve seen before. Explore a little-known piece of Idaho when you take on this incredible trail.
Located near the small city of Grand View in Owyhee County, the Oolite Interpretive Trail is a unique adventure unlike any other in the state. This trail is short, but it leads you to a wonderful geologic wonder that a lot of people don't even know exists.
Finding the trail is very easy, making this an awesome excursion for the casual adventurer looking for a quick outing. The trailhead can be found from a turnout off of Mud Flat Road which runs south of town. You can find the exact location here.
From the parking lot, the hike is just around a half mile until you come across the oolites. The trail is mostly flat, but contains a short and steep portion at the very end. Also, the elements out here can be rough—hot during summer and frigid during winter, so plan accordingly.
The moment when the trail meets the rock formations is simply surreal. The oolite is a unique type of sedimentary rock which was formed by the movement of the waves of an ancient lake. The lake washed sediment back and forth up the shore, creating these otherworldly formations.
In a way, they are very similar in appearance to the iconic arches of southern Utah—although obviously much smaller in scale. Still, seeing these rocks—the result of thousands of years of geologic activity—is simply awe-inspiring.
There are a few informational signs situated along the trail, but for the most part this landscape feels as wild as can be. This gorgeous landscape is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and as a result it boasts a type of tranquility that just can't be beat.
You'll even get a fantastic view of the Owyhees if you make the trek up to the tallest rock formation. The Oolite Interpretive Trail is an underrated adventure in southern Idaho, but it's bound to become one of your favorites.
