Alligators in Idaho? There’s no such thing…right? Wrong. Unless you’re visiting a zoo, alligators are one of the last things you expect to come across here in Idaho. However, the next time you’re in Buhl, you might find yourself stumbling across one of these mighty creatures. Several alligators have made their home in one of Buhl’s natural hot springs. It sounds too weird to be true, but it is…and it’s definitely something you have to see to believe.
You'll find these scaly creatures residing at the famed Miracle Hot Springs.
Miracle Hot Springs consists of four luxurious public pools and 15 private hot pools.
These pools see a lot of visitors because of their casual and soothing atmosphere. The four main pools are all set at varying temperatures. There's something for everyone here. If you're passing through town, these pools are the perfect spot to stop and relax for a bit.
Many people take advantage of Miracle Hot Spring's unique campground which is comprised of yurt-like geometric domes for sleeping in.
These domes come equipped with heated floors, a space heater, fan, and sleeping pads. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind way of camping!
It seems strange that just steps away from the campground is a fenced off enclosure that the alligators inhabit.
It all started decades ago when the owners of Miracle Hot Springs realized that alligators could be perfectly happy living in the warm spring water that mimics their natural habitat, and that the alligators would act as a unique attraction for visitors.
The hot springs are kept at a perfect temperature of 75-80 degrees for the alligators.
This portion of the Hagerman Valley experiences mild winters and sweltering summers, resembling a semi-tropical environment at times. Once you take this into account, the idea of alligators in Idaho doesn't seem so bizarre.
Still, the thought of these giant, cold blooded creatures residing right next to where people soak and sleep is...a little bit terrifying.
Rumor has it that an alligator once escaped the enclosure and made its way to the Snake River. However, this myth has never been proven.
The alligator enclosure at Miracle Hot Springs may just be one of the wackiest attractions in all of Idaho.
So, if you want to see one of these majestic creatures up close and personal then start planning your trip to Buhl! It just goes to show that nothing is impossible here in Idaho.
