Hiking trails are abundant here in Idaho, but it’s rare that one leads you straight to a historical wonder that few people even know exists. That’s exactly what you’ll experience when you set off on the Adelmann Mine Trail in southern Idaho. Rated as moderate, this trail does have its challenges. However, every single step is worth it once you see the long-abandoned mine at the end. The historic Adelmann Mine is a real hidden gem located near Boise, Idaho. Located right off of Highway 21 near Lucky Peak State Park, the hike to find it is 4.7-miles out-and-back, and it's worth every single step.
You'll find the trailhead at the Boise River Wildlife Management Area. Comprised of over 34,000 acres, this area is absolutely stunning. It boasts endless, awe-inspiring views, beautiful wildflowers in the spring and summer, and abundant wildlife.
The trail is nice and wide, making it easy to follow as it leads you deeper into the hills. Keep in mind that the trail keeps a steady incline for the entirety of hike and there is little to no shade, so plan to bring plenty of water and pace yourself.
The hike is worth it for the stunning vistas alone. Surrounded entirely by mountains and hills, it's definitely a peaceful place to escape to for the day.
At last, you'll start to see the mine after cresting a hill near the end of the trail. Seeing it is certainly an amazing experience. The mine is in surprisingly good shape. Nobody is really sure just how old it is, but mining claims in this area date back to 1903.
The mines in this area were never incredibly successful. They yielded some gold, silver, lead, pyrite, and quartz, but not enough to really be of notice. However, its remains have survived for over a century and that's definitely a feat in itself!
The fact that this structure has endured for so long is certainly something to revel. Be sure to be respectful of its historic elements and avoid causing any harm to it!
Exploring the mine is the perfect reward after completing the slightly strenuous uphill trek. However, keep in mind that—though it may be tempting— you should absolutely not enter the mine building. Such an old structure is at risk for collapsing, lack of oxygen, and left behind chemicals. Appreciate it from afar!
