After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
As the most isolated population center on earth, the Hawaiian Islands are unique in everything from our culture and weather to the food we eat. And there is perhaps no food more iconic than the Hawaiian plate lunch. The traditional Hawaiian lunch can be found at restaurants and eateries across the islands, and most often consists of two scoops of rice, some sort of salad, and an entree — and this unassuming gem in Honolulu serves some of the best plate lunches we’ve ever tried.
Tucked away off-the-beaten-path in the McCully-Moiliili neighborhood is the unassuming Yama’s Fish Market, a casual spot that serves up mouthwatering homemade Hawaiian and local favorites.
Though Yama’s does offer a variety of fresh, high-quality seafood for poke, poke bowls, and sashimi, you’ll find so much more to love at this under-the-radar gem where every day is Aloha Friday, according to their website.
Don’t forget to check out the daily specials, too. Furikake-crusted salmon, roast pork with gravy, and gandule rice with pastele are just a few of the options you might find on the specials board.
Yama’s Fish Market is open Wednesday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Tuesdays. For more information, head on over to their website, then tell us in the comments: what is your favorite go-to plate lunch spot?
