After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
If there were to be only one dessert associated with Hawaii, it would be shave ice. Not only is shave ice the perfect snack for a quick sugar rush after a day spent at the beach, but it’s one treat that’s pretty much exclusive to the Aloha State. You see, shave ice and snow cones are not the same things — the consistency of true shave ice is that of newly fallen snow, not the granular and crunchy ice so many are used to. And while you’ll find shave ice shops across the Hawaiian Islands, today, we’re sharing with you one of our favorites.
Nestled just off Kuhio Highway on Kauai’s northern shore in the small town of Hanalei — population 450 — is, arguably, one of the best shave ice shops in the entire Aloha State, Wishing Well Shave Ice.
Organic housemade flavors include everything from classics like grape, strawberry, cherry, and lime to local tastes like pineapple, lychee, li hing mui, and P.O.G. Customize your own creation or choose from a variety of scrumptious recommendations.
There are currently eight custom flavor combinations, each more delicious than the last. Will you try the Caffeine Monkey, made with coffee and banana syrups topped with a snowcap and banana over ice cream? Or perhaps the Local — a marvelous creation of strawberry, vanilla, and li hing mui syrups topped with sweetened condensed milk over vanilla ice cream — is more your thing?
Shave ice isn’t all you’ll find here, though. Wishing Well also serves hot and iced coffee as well as acai bowls perfect for fueling up before an adventure.
While you enjoy some of the best shave ice you’ve ever tasted, hang out at a picnic table under the shade of these large trees, take in the laid-back atmosphere of Hanalei, and watch waterfalls as they cascade down the cliffs of the nearby mountains.
Whether you’re hoping to cool off after a day spent wandering and shopping in Hanalei or a long afternoon spent enjoying the waters of the nearby Hanalei Bay, Wishing Well Shave Ice is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Wishing Well Shave Ice is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, head on over to their website or follow them on Facebook. Have you been to Wishing Well? Do you agree that it’s the best shave ice in the Aloha State? If not, where’s your favorite spot to enjoy this sweet local treat?
