When you think of the Wild, Wild West, the Hawaiian Islands don’t typically come to mind. But what most people do not know is that Hawaii is home to one of the oldest ranches in the United States. Parker Ranch, found on Hawaii Island, was opened in 1847 and predates many mainland ranches in Texas and other southwestern states by more than thirty years. And while that is certainly impressive, we’re talking about another paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) destination today.
Nestled on the slopes of Mount Haleakala is a gorgeous landscape known as upcountry Maui. This picturesque area is known for its incredible paniolo culture and is home to not only sweeping, panoramic views and plenty of history, but a ranch restaurant and shop that deserves your attention.
The Ulupalakua Ranch Store is located at 14800 Piilani Hwy, Kula, HI 96790, and is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Have you ever visited this ranch store and grill? Share your experiences with us in the comments below!
For another glimpse into Hawaii’s paniolo history, consider a trip to the charming town of Makawao.
