You'll Want To Add Wailua Falls To Your Hawaii Bucket List

Maui’s Road to Hana is perhaps the most popular scenic drive on the island – and possibly all of Hawaii. This infamous 64.4-mile highway that stretches from Kahului to Hana is popular not for the destination – Hana Town – but for the incredible journey it takes to get there and the natural wonders you’ll find along the way. While many of the stops along Hana Highway are overcrowded with tourists, there’s one often-overlooked swimming hole you’ll want to visit this summer: Wailua Falls.

Because Wailua is a stream-fed waterfall, it is important to issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with flash flooding, and leptospirosis bacteria found in many of Hawaii’s natural pools. It is advised that you check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, never swim in these pools when you have open wounds and to always watch your step.

Located on the Hana Highway between mile markers 44 and 45, you will find the enchanting Wailua Falls. Visible from the highway, you won’t want to miss this stunning waterfall on your Maui road trip.

Viewable from the bridge, Wailua Falls cascades approximately 80 feet from the Honolewa Stream and into the ocean below.

Though the waterfall’s flow depends on rainfall, the lush surrounding cliff face easily makes this one of the most picturesque - and easily accessible - waterfalls in Hawaii.

There is a small parking lot near the waterfall, where many people stop along the Hana Highway to take a quick photograph. In fact, many island guidebooks claim that Wailua Falls is Maui’s most photographed waterfall, but we tend to disagree.

Despite how popular the waterfall may seem from above, few people have the time - or even know about - the short and slippery path to visit the gorgeous swimming hole below.

Here, just feet below the bridge where tourists fight to take the perfect photograph, is a seemingly-secluded waterfall pool you’re sure to fall in love with. There is also supposedly a small cave near the pool to explore.

Rumor has it (and by rumor, I mean one recent comment on a guidebook website entry) that the path to the pool below Wailua Falls is permanently closed.
