With more than 10 years of experience as a professional writer, Megan holds a degree in Mass Media from her home state of Minnesota. After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
In addition to our world-famous beaches, the Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible trails and hikes perfect for those of all skill levels. And while we love our state’s most difficult trails — like the Kalalau Trail which meanders 11 miles along Kauai’s Na Pali Coast — not everyone is an experienced hiker, which is why we’re recommending this leisurely trail through upcountry Maui that leads hikers on a short and sweet journey through the forest.
This is the Waihou Spring Loop Trail, a 1.4-mile trail that leads hikers through forests of Cypress, Eucalyptus, and native Hawaiian Koa trees.
The lower trail is reserved for more experienced hikers, but today, we’re sharing with you the upper trail, a leisurely hike perfect for the entire family.
Located in Upcountry Maui at the end of Piiholo Road, the trail is located within the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve, a 186-acre slice of heaven that will transport you to another place.
This stunning hike is a perfect example of just how diverse Maui’s topography can be, and it’s almost hard to believe this forest is hiding on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Depending on when you visit, you might not encounter another soul on your hiking trip. So, be careful, and pack a first aid kit, plenty of water, and a fully-charged cell phone. You might also want mosquito repellent and a camera.
